Our trip to bonnie Scotland has been full of culture, history, exploration, and ministry..our days packed and our tolerance for cold from our usual Chicago winters have prepared us well for our time outside sightseeing and experiencing history.

On arriving to Scotland, we were greeted by a traditional Scottish piper to have that moment of “I can’t believe I’m really in Scotland!”

After settling in to our host homes that day (Wed, Jan 4), we celebrated Ally’s birthday with cake and games at the Bell’s home. Then after a good night’s sleep, we participated in an evangelism training seminar that helped the students learn more about the spiritual climate in Scotland as well as how to share the testimony clearly, biblically, and in under three minutes….that time constraint was a struggle for some. We spent the afternoon and evening going to lunch, doing a little shopping, and then played two rounds of 10-pin bowling …these were great times of team bonding!

On Friday, January 6, we set off on our first sightseeing adventure as we headed off to St. Andrews. We thankfully had beautiful weather on this day…St. Andrews is right on the North Sea, so we worried about how cold it could be. But the sun was out for most the day (a rarity this time of year in Scotland), and we were able to explore the city and enjoy the history that St. Andrews has in our Chrisitan heritage. We saw the world-famous golf course, the beaches where Chariots of Fire was filmed, the castle and catherdral ruins, and of course, the univerisyt where Prince William and Kate met! Here’s a picture of all the students at the green of the 18th hole with the beautiful golf club in the background.

On Saturday, Jan 7, we spent the day in Edinburgh were we visited the castle, The Elephant House Cafe, and took a celtic tour of the city. Edinburgh is rich in church history, and we had an opportunity to visit many sites were significant events occured in Christianity. We saw the church where John Knox preached, the Grassmarket where many Christians were killed for their faith, and a church whose deacons and elders were leaders in the science, education, and the development of social programs. Here’s a pic with our very own Scottish Braveheart on the streets of Edinburgh.

Sunday, Jan 8, we spent the morning at Elim church where the students shared testimonies and led the congregation in singing Amazing Grace. Tonight we are leading the service for youth groups from all over the area back at Elim church. Pictures of this ministry opportunity will come soon!

“The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he who wins souls is wise.” Proverbs 11:30
Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.” Daniel 12:3 The Gospel must never be isolated from the complete revelation of Biblical truth. “The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy him forever” and God is glorified in the salvation of the lost. The Gospel must be heralded in the light of this truth. Evangelism is derived from two Greek words meaning “To proclaim good news.” The good news of evangelism is that “God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them.” Evangelism is heralding the gospel to a lost world, in the power of the Spirit in an effort to win the lost. Evangelism involves action, it is going and doing. It is not holding the fort, it is heralding the truth. It is not being evangelical it is being evangelistic. It is not worship it is witness. It is not praising it is preaching It is not celebrating it is seeking the lost. Evangelism is a command not a suggestion. Beware of the church that rejects evangelism, its candle will be removed. Beware of the man, who opposes evangelism, his light will go out. Give yourself to evangelism and become wise and shine like the brightness of the heavens! Be a star for Jesus!

By-Ian-Leitch
